ok, that does sort of explain it, but why would it stop working on an acc2003 db running on a acc2010 pc ?

If you open the database in Access 2010, it goes by the rules of 2010, naturally.

But it still doesn't let you enter a new row with just a press of the down arrow key as the OP said.

Never said it would - but if you are happily filling in other fields it would. I only knocked it together quickly, no error checking etc, but if you wanted to do that, just add

Field1 = Field1.DefaultValue

to the form current event
