    Access trigerring other software

    Hi,

I am new to trying to build an access database. I am a musician and would like to build a database of my backing tracks, and be able to play them as well. Can that be done with access and how? Eg. be able to scroll through the backing tracks and once I click on a track it starts playing and also pull up the lyrics?

    Regards

    Jim

What have you done so far?
Do you have any database training? Have you worked through any tutorials?
    What is your plan?

I have not done anything yet. I wanted to know if this is possible or not. I have bought a software called stageprompt pro (free trial version downloadable) however, I used it on a gig on Saturday and it slows me down in the sense that once its playing a backing track, you are only seeing the lyrics scrolli and therefore unable to prepare the next song. This software is based on access which unless there is a lot going on behind the scenes makes me think it is possible to have access trigger all of that (ie scrolling lyrics, media player playing the track.).
I work in IT but networking side and not programming but am prepared to self teach. What is the best place to start?
    Regards
    Jim

Before buying anything (regardless of what subject -- accounting, inventory, or backing tracks) make a list of the things/facilities that you need (these are the MUST haves), then
a list of things/options that would be nice to have (but not mandatory)
    then
    do some research/googling

You may get some leads from searching:
What do others use for the kind of application you are thinking about?
What are their comments? good/bad/lacks xxx/ too expensive,...

With or without info from others, you can do searches for:
What "packages/software" is/are available to do this type of thing generally
For each of these, what features does it have, and how do they match up with your requirements?

Do some comparisons with your needs, and those packages.

Building an application (as you may already know if your are in IT -depending on what area of IT) has a lot of parts and all require effort. Sometimes you can find good shareware (free or small $$). Developing helps with learning but can be time consuming and less-featured than commercial material.

Good luck with your decisions and project.

A good intro tutorial is this from RogersAccessLibrary. Work through it if you have any interest in database. You will learn key concepts, and expand your IT knowledge.

    Hi,
Many thanks for the advice. I have been searching for a good while now and have not found something that does exactly what I want it to do and that is why I have started researching making my own. My most important question however still remains whether through MA Access, other programs can be triggered???

The short answer is 'yes they can'.

You can use the application.followhyperlink to fire them off.

err.. assuming you are storing path/filename and NOT the audio file itself, which is what you should be doing.
