Change name of record in a field

I have a table with a field that has several different names for the same group. For example: the name in the record could say heat exchanger 1001 and the next field could say heat ex. 32251. Is it possible to have another field that that show that these two items are heat exchangers?

Sure. For example, you could have a second table that contains two fields, (1) the values for the name field and (2) the explanation of what kind of equipment that is.

Basically I imported the data from excel and there are over 600 records with several different groups and names that I want to place into those different groups. I tried to use an IFF query but its just too many.

That's why creating a cross reference table to store the conversion is a good option. Then you can either leave that data in that table, or you can add a field to your other table and update the new field using the cross reference table as a source.
