Access 97 executables and other versions of Access

I have a few questions regarding Access 97 and other versions of Access as we don't have time to develop .net versions of our Access 97 databases and some of our users are moving to other versions of Office/Access - I work for a local authority hence we tend to be very slow in moving to newer technology!

We've tried converting our Access 97 databases (lots of front end forms) into Access 2000 but they fail and we don't want to install two versions of Access due to having our applications delivered via Novell to the user (PC's are locked down).

Do we need to purchase anything to produce stand alone executables which could be used on any pc regardless of which version of Access is installed instead of using mdb/mde files?

Would stand alone executables have all the functionality of mdb/mde files?

Would this overcome the Office XXX version problem?

Will newer versions of Windows become an issue (we're on a mixture of 2000 and XP at the moment)?

Are there any issues with going down this route?

    Thanks

    Steve

The default reference in ac97 was DAO. In ac2k it was switched to ADO. You might want to look at your references and check DAO and uncheck ADO, or at least make sure DAO is first in the list. ac2K should be able to run the ac97 without a problem.

Doh!! It's been a long week and I've forgotten something pretty major!

The Access 97 is used as the front end to a sql server database.

The clocks going back have fried my brain!

Shouldn't make any difference. Do you know if ADO was used in the ac97 stuff or was it DAO?

I have no idea, where do I need to look - it's not my development, I've just been tasked with trying to find a possible solution that doesn't involve redeveloping it all in .net!

OPen the db while holding down a <SHIFT> key and then open a code module. From there go to Tools>References and see whether you have ADO or DAO checked. If both are checked, the order they are in the list is important.

I did try and open it with the shift key.

I don't have any modules, just forms that use queries and tables that are linked tables to the sql database using odbc.

Tools doesn't have a References option.

I'm looking in 97 as I don't have any other version of Access, do I need to look in 2000 or above?

Hmmm...I don't have ac97 so I am just guessing it is similar to ac2002. Can you get to the code module of a form and try Tools>References? Does Help shpw you how to check references? I've heard the Help system in ac97 is a lot better than subsequent versions.

I'm guessing that there isn't an option for ADO or DAO in 97 (being pre-ADO) and I'm also thinking that we're using odbc direct rather than Jet (DAO).

I'll chase up with my line manager (as he wrote it) and see what I can find out.

So if you import into an ac2K mdb and check DAO and uncheck ADO does your system work or do you get errors? If errors, what sort of errors?

That's a very good question, not having Access 2000, I can't actually run a test and find out!

All I know is there are errors

I'll see what I can find out.

Thanks for all your help btw
