    Older file-loading issue with Windows 10

    Hello,

    My name is Ron and this is my first time in the forum. Here’s my issue;

    In 1997 I first began using Access 97 to manage my database. I also used Excel and Word (all 97 versions). This continued for years and as the new-versions came about my purposes simply didn’t require new upgrades. Also, I dreaded the downtime-learning curve interrupting my work.

    Years ago I bought a Windows 07 laptop and my three 1997 programs loaded perfectly, so again I felt no need to upgrade. Now I bought Windows 10 (new laptop) I loaded the three programs and again all loaded perfectly! There’s only one stupid little thing about Access that I need help with;

    I sometimes IMPORT and/or EXPORT in Excel and TEXT formats. These two formats are missing from Access’s drop-down list of formats to choose. During the installation process, the CD has a “customize” list and the term “Data Access” is there and described as; “ Database Drivers and utilities that let you connect to data in a variety of different formats.”

    I’m certain it holds the files I need but whether I “select all” or isolate this Option with a check-mark, it simply doesn’t load it. There’s also a few Patch-programs I’d use in the past which I still have; sr1off97.exe and off97vpk.exe. I tried both more than once but to no avail and it was my understanding that these "“missing formats” may also be within off97vpk.exe.

    Its very frustrating because everything else appears functional. I’d hate to invest time learning the new Access over something like this. From the images and videos I’ve seen its layout and SQL input looks completely alien from what I’m used to.

    IS THERE A WAY to get Windows 10 to properly load these missing format-files? Change coding or pinpoint the file(s) off the CD contents or perhaps copy it over from my older laptop’s folder?

    Your help is very welcome.

    Thank you,

    Ron

    don't think I can help you with your specific issue but you might find this link of interest

    if you look towards the bottom you will see that at best access'97 is 'not specifically supported, but functional'. With Win10 becoming more and more security focused it would not surprise me if the format you require has now been discarded for a later, more secure format - which of course access'97 wont be able to use.

    you should really consider at least upgrading to 2003 which has much the same look and feel as 97, preferably 2010 which is the last version which will recognise '97 format - before it becomes impossible. I also wouldn't throw away your win 07 laptop, you may just have to revert to it at some point.

    If I'm not mistaken, A97 is 16 bit and W10 is at least 32 bit, plus a lot has changed in terms of security, db engine, library files (dll, olb, tlb, etc) and the way software interacts with the OS. So I agree - keep the old OS and Office versions on the laptop, along with the 97 version which you never convert. Upgrade and then consider importing all object (tables, queries, etc) from 97 version into a newer format and see what happens. If your Office version is 64 bit, then it would be interesting if the97 db even opened.
