    cannot edit records, but randomly

    hello,

at office, we use a database built with access 2003. The data base is in a folder shared by many computers, but just 6-7 computers use this database, with access 2003 or 2010.

It has worked well for long time, but when reached size of 300 megabyte, returned randomly an error "system resource exceeded" when performing a search in it, but only to the users that had access 2010.

recently, once the database reached 390 megabytes, it returned an insufficient disk space error, when editing a record. But not always.

A it technician, run a "compact and repair database" that reduced the database to 4 megabyte, and solved both errors, but after one day, again RANDOMLY we cannot save records on exiting the database, but this time, without the " insufficient disk space" error, so we work, we close the database thinking data have been saved, but sometimes they dont! We tried also to use just a machine at once with access 2003, but with no luck. Every once in a while, the data arent saved.

NOTE: I made a copy of this database, and u know what? when I edit a record on one (the copy ot the original), the other is modified the same way as well!!!

I really hope u can help us because this database is very impotant for our job! thank you!!!

It sounds to me like your database is a split database. This means the Data (tables) are in one file, the UI (user interface/forms/reports/queries) are in a second database. By 'copying the database' you are copying the front end only. If you look at your tables and see a little arrow next to them (see image below with a linked and unlinked table) you can right click on the linked table and choose 'linked table manager'. That'll show you where the database with the tables is stored. I would compact/repair both the front end and back end and see if that works. If not you may need to look into giving each person their own 'front end' (user interface). If this is a UI using bound forms (forms tied directly to a data source) you may also want to look at moving away from bound forms to unbound forms but that's just my personal preference, I don't know if it will help your problem.

hello and thank you for your answer.

Apparently, our technical support succedeed in finding out what the problem was.
Tha database was in a folder with a limited space available, so we received the "insufficient disk space" when we tried to modify a record. So the support modified the space available for that folder, and apparently worked fine.
