    Who owns the data?

I have a client who is in dispute with a software developer (not me!) and is looking at an alternative solution.

He needs to transfer his data to a new app whatever that may turn out to be. Unfortunately the tables are, of course, locked down, so he would have to seek their help. (not about to happen!)

So, does the client own the data? And if so, the vendor is effectively withholding that data.

The relationship with the vendor has deteriorated so bad they don't want to have anything to do with them any more.

    So, are they screwed?

    Cheers,
    Brodie

My personal opinion, worth what you're paying for it, is that the client owns the data. Whether the vendor is under any obligation to help extract it from their application is another matter. I'll play devil's advocate and say the vendor isn't "withholding the client's data", they're just not helping get it out of their application. Of course, from the client's perspective that is a form of withholding it. Messy situation, bad business for the vendor. Is giving them bad reviews via the appropriate platform a viable threat?

Does the app provide any built-in export functionality that could be used?

I should have searched the forum first. I just found how to access the tables.

Thanks pbaldy, no there is no function to export.

    Cheers,

Ah good, glad you got it sorted. The data is in Access? Probably any number of ways to get the data out. I was thinking it was some other platform.
