How do you use Tempvars in an Update query?

I have tried to use in an Update query - Tempvars("tvTotPrin") but it doen't recognize the Tempvar variable. Could you give me a nudge in the right direction? Thanks

    Correct syntax is: [TempVars]![tvTotPrin]

I tried a lot of permutations but , of course, not this one. I consider this very strange and would have never thought to enter the criteria in this format :[TempVars]![tvTotPrin]. Once again thanks but could you tell me how you figured this out? Just intellectual curiosity ;-)
