    FE Updater Problem

I am using the FE Updater by Peter Hibbs. Does anyone know why on some computers I am not able to see the shared drives? I only see the C drive. I am trying to link this file to one of the shared network drives but its not showing up in the windows explorer window. What am I doing wrong?

Are all computers using Windows 8? A common problem I have seen is where windows simple file sharing can cause problems with who can see and who can't see a commonly shared file. To be honest I have never heard of your Front End Updater. Have you checked with the Peter Hibbs?

Heard of but never seen the Peter Hibbs code (search and will find website).

I have my own code in the db to update user frontend copy. Don't remember where I found it but it works. https://www.accessforums.net/code-re...end-33331.html
How to attach file: http://www.accessforums.net/showthread.php?t=70301 To provide db: copy, remove confidential data, run compact & repair, zip w/Windows Compression.

I haven't contacted Peter Hibbs yet because this FE Updater seems to have been last updated in 2008 so he may not be around to help out. All the computers I am trying to set this up on is using Windows 7. The backend file is on the G Drive and when it asks me to link the back end file I can only see the C Drive. However, I know the G Drive is available because I can access it through My Computer.

This FE Updater is really great and works really well. I have it working on a couple computers in my office. It just doesn't seem to work on all of them and I can't figure out why. I do notice one difference though and it may have something to do with running the updater file as adminstrator. The updater file is an .exe file and on my computer it does not have the blue and yellow shield on the icon. My computer runs this updater flawlessly. Whereas the computers that I am having trouble with do show the blue and yellow shield on the icon. This blue and yellow shield seems to be shown based on the settings of the run as admin option on the computer. I have tried to set the notification to low but that blue and yellow shield does not go away. Maybe it's this admin setting that is causing problems to prevent the shared drives from showing in the left pane of the Windows Explorer window when I am trying to browse for the back end file to link this updater.

    Any thoughts?

    In the documentation Peter states
"Note that if you are using an Operating System other than Windows XP or Windows Vista you may need to also install the VB6 run time program. "

Yeah I did see that but I figured that would be for OSX or Linux because all the computers that I have tested this on are using Windows 7 and it works on 2 out of the 5 computers I have tried so far. So I'm thinking it's some kind of setting. I do know that on my computer, (which the FE Updater does work) it doesn't have that blue and yellow shield icon that I mentioned. The blue and yellow shield is a small icon on the FE Updater icon. So this I believe is some kind of security setting. If you right click on a program icon, it will give you a list of options. One of those options is "Run as Administrator". Next to this option is a blue and yellow shield. I'm thinking it has something to do with this but I'm not for sure certain. So when I initially try it on a Windows 7 computer at my office, the FE Updater icon has that blue and yellow shield on it. So I double click it to open it and it has one of those prompts that will notify me if I really want to trust and open it. Below is a change setting link I can click on to stop this from asking me every time I try to open this FE Updater so I go ahead and change the setting to never notify me. After that the blue and yellow shield is still there but whenever I click on the FE Updater icon, it no longer prompts me of that message. I really don't know if this blue and yellow shield has anything to do with my problem but it's just one of the differences I noticed from a computer that works, compared to a computer that does not work.

Please anyone, if you have any ideas or suggestions, I'm willing to try it out.

Prior to all this, I could have sworn that one of the computers I set up a couple weeks ago that was not showing the shared drives initially, eventually did pop up in the navigation pane under Computer and where the C: Drive usually shows up. I believe I had to restart the computer after I set up the FE Updater to make all those network shared drives show up in the navigation pane list. However, I have tried this process several times recently and was not able to produce that same result. So I'm not sure if I'm imagining it or not since at the time, 2 weeks ago, I was only briefly messing around with the FE Updater to get myself familiar with it and didn't give it much thought. So that's pretty much all I got as of right now.

Alright I think I have solved the mystery. This is for Windows 7. You need to go into the control panel and first get access to change the security settings of the user accounts. Not exactly sure what it's called since I do not have a Windows 7 machine with me at the moment since I am typing this from a Chromebook. Anyway once you get into the user accounts from control panel you need to set the notification level to the lowest setting. This notification setting is for when running programs that can't determine if its from a trusted source if gives you a warning to only open the program if you know its from a trusted source. When this setting is changed, you still need to restart the computer so that the change is applied when opening this front end updater. Yes, you will be able to open this FE Updater without notification even with a restart but this is what causes the problem not to be able to see the shared drives in the navigation pane. So once the computer is restarted, you will be able to run the FE Updater and see the shared drives. I hope this helps someone with the same problem. This thing drove me nuts. Thanks for all the suggestions and help guys. Appreciate it.

No problem and thanks for trying to help me out. I made an error in my last post. The correction is in red:

Yes, you will be able to open this FE Updater without notification even without a restart but this is what causes the problem not to be able to see the shared drives in the navigation pane.

    Thanks again everyone.
