I developed POS software package by piggy-backing on an existing POS. I split the databases and then created new software for the client, so every time the POS is updated, my software displays the information from the original database. It works fine, but I have reached a point where I would like to develop my own POS Software from scratch and will to purchase an ECR with a scanner. How do I go about doing this....Thanks a mill for all you advice thus far

So you have your own front end separate from their current POS?

Is their backend just too mangled for your taste?

Basically Yes, I use their backend to get the information to display on my front end, but I also have a function that updates their data so that when they upload the data to the ECR any changes performed by my front-end will be applied. My problem is setting up the necessary parameters to talk directly with the ECR, thereby bypassing their back-end completely. This will enable me to then package my software for marketing.

Not 100% sure what ECR is. Is it a badging system? Does it come with software or an API?

Hi Xipooo,

An ECR is an Electronic Cash Register (ECR) that can come with or without a scanner, most of the ECR's sold in South Africa comes with software where the client can manipulate the data before uploading the information to the cash register, i.e. stock and prices. Most of the software is standard and does not cater for most of the needs or requirements of clients.

Ok, but how are you supposed to interact with the ECR? Is it fully enclosed but gives you tables of data to work with, or is there an API you can use?
