why does access open linked table

    Hi,

I have an access qry which has some xlsx linked tables. I use an excel file as kind of a front end, which means that users who need output from the DB, open the excel file, in which the queries are refreshed on opening of the file.

Most of the time, this works fine, but recently, it started to happen that suddently, some of the linked tables are opened automatically. I suppose by access when refreshing queries.

Can anyone explain me why this happens and how I can prevent it from happening.

    your help is much appreciated!

    No idea.

What do you mean by the 'linked tables are opened' - is the backend Access file open?

Why is Excel used as frontend instead of Access file?

    Hi,

The xls file, which is linked to access and contains de table date is opened. As you refer to this as the backend access file, it is correct. Normally, this file is only manually opened by a user when the user needs to "import" data into access. We use for some tables linked files since this is very easy to be maintained.

the reason that excel is used as frontend, is mainly because the users do not have any access knowledge. Therefore, a query is linked into excel. on opening of the excel file, the query runs and the data is updated. on this base query, I have some excel pivots, for easy use. next to this, access is not a standard office application in our company.

I am still not sure of what is happening. When you say "some of the linked tables are opened automatically", do you mean Access is opened and Access table opens? Or do you mean something unexpected happens in Excel?

Exactly what is this arrangement? Access links to Excel sheets? You have a query based on these links? Excel is linked to this query? This is two different Excel files?

ok, let me try to explain again:

There is an access db which uses external data (excel linked tables). The DB is only opened by me (let's say the admin) and contains some queries. Nothing special, just queries build on tables (normal access tables and linked tables)

To consult the output of the queries, the users are using an excel file (the frontend) because they don't work with access directly. this excel file is linked to the DB (like excel/Data/from access..) and refreshes the query on opening of the file. It used to go fine, but since a while, the xls files which act as the linked tables are opened. According to me, these xls files are opened by access and I don't know why, and I don't want it to happen.

An Excel file has data. Access links to that Excel file. Users have another Excel file as frontend that pulls data from Access. This is one I haven't seen before.

When you open Access, the linked Excel file opens? That does sound odd. Doubly odd that it didn't used to but now does. Are you sure nothing in the setup has changed? Software, hardware upgrades?

Can you test the Access file on another computer?

The only thing I can suggest trying is reinstall Access or maybe the whole Office suite.

Was hoping someone else would come in with ideas.
