need help with summing a range

My Access skills are rusty from non-use but I'm trying to get back on track, hence the following dumb question...

My COA includes both detail and summary accounts. My available software reports only include detail. I have created a database where I have merged the summary accounts and the trial balance but I need a way to sum the ranges of detail to their parent. (Parent total will appear in a separate column.)

I would like to do a statement like:

If COA range is between 70.1000.001 and 70.1000.999 sum to 70.1000.000 but I'm not sure how to do this.

Anyone have any ideas for me?

    Thanks.

what does your non filtered query look like. The expresion may look something like this:

Sum([detail field name] WHRE [COA field name] Between 70.1000.001 and 70.1000.999)

Since that field is a Text field, you may not get the results you expect.
