Update Function Like DLookup

Is there a function that is similar to DLookup that will let me update a field in a table? For example, I have a NextItemNbr in a control table. I know I can use DLookup to find the value and put it on a form. After the operator hits "OK", I want to add 1 to the NextItemNbr field and update the entry.

I would use a recordset to get the value rather than DLookup. That way you can use the Edit method of the recordset to update the value, plus use the locking options to prevent clashes.
