I'm not sure how to use queries

I have bunch of different queries to make, but I don't know how to save them, or really anything about the peculiarities of Access 2010.

Here's what the New States query looks like:

And here's what the query produces:

This query is incorrect, but when I change it I can't get the change to persist.

There have been more than 5 states admitted to the union since 1790. Well, there's a mistake in this query - it should be <(12/31/1790) - but still, this is bizarre.

My professor gave us some half-assed lectures on this, and then he told us to google it (problem based learning), but every program has it's oddities, and he expects me to somehow spend 20 hours learning the ins and outs of Access, when I have 3 other classes that require my time and I have no access to a Windows computer on Weekends.

Please tell me the peculiarities of queries in Access 2010, so I can turn this in late on Tuesday.

There are lectures in these links. You may have to scan them to isolate what you're looking for.
    Good luck.

Here is a great article on the principles of Database Design.

Since you are new to database you may find this free video tutorials a good example of concepts.

Since you're new to Access this set of videos will definitely be helpful.

When I was learning this stuff, there was no internet and you tube. It was punched cards and a library
and a whole lot of reading and experimenting. The best we had was tempermental Remote Job Entry to some other computer somewhere. I'm sure the workload was similar -- perseverance is key.
