What is @ in the "format" box

What does the @ symbol stand for in a format box?

I recently changed a text field to a memo field. When typing into the field on a form, I can type more than 255 characters, but when I move to another field it truncates my entry.

Thank you for the excellent answer. I believe I have rectified the issue, but have not tested as yet.

    Once again, Thank you.
