Access MDB saying that it is in use by another when no LDB and no other user present on PC HELP

I have an access MDB that was created on this PC, then copied with the to be linked tables to a network that is using Access 365. I can open the MDB in update mode on the network. However I have copied that version to a thumb drive when no one else was in the file (no LDBs present). When it is put back on my PC when I try to open it in update mode (shift key down) it returns the message that another user has it open so I can't edit it. It does more that that. ALL forms, linked tables - everything - is NOT visible.

HELP............ any hints to cause or better yet solution?

so there ARE linked tables and these are on the network drive?
and running it from the thumb drive, it can still read the network?

sometimes the same PC could have the db open twice and get that error.
(an there isnt one stuck in TaskManager)

Do Not open Access from a thumb drive. I don't know if that will solve this problem but if you continue to do this you will quite possibly have a far bigger issue called corruption. Or are you not doing this and you've installed to your home pc? In that case, you are sure there is no lock file in the folder you have added the file to? That folder is in a Trusted Location?

When I attempted this at the site the linked DB could locate the file. However when I copy that copied MDB to my PC I am unable to EDIT the MDB in order to change the links. Internally I have a form that runs code that lets me 1) unlink all of the tables and then 2) relink them to a new location on my PC.
Obviously to relink them on my PC I have to be able to get to that form which I USED TO BE ABLE TO DO. In that process I have to be able to open the MDB in edit mode so that it DOES NOT attempt to run any code. This is how I handle moving the MDB back and forth between the remote site and my PC.
But I cannot get to that form on my PC now because of that message and Access making the forms and tables invisible.

Prior to this problem I have never had a problem. I copied the MDB from the thumb drive to my PC and there were/are NO LDBs visible until I attempt to open the MDB in edit mode. That is when I get the problem. I have even copied the MDB and then changed the name and attempted to do the edit open and I get the same message. It seems the problem is associated with the actual MDB. Usually I don't copy it back to my PC but I did this time to make sure the versions were the same and stupidly I did not backup my copy this time.

That sounds like it cannot be due to having a leftover version of the file running in the background - especially if you've got a copy with a new name. It also would have to mean that the db was opened exclusively, which probably is never done in normal use in your case (unless I am thinking of the wrong error message). I hate to be the first one to jump on the 'corruption' bandwagon so to speak, but that's what this sounds like. Perhaps at the original site, copy, do a decompile and recompile operation on the copy then put it on your thumb drive and try again. If you can do this at work then the problem must be a) you have a version stuck open in the background (see Task Scheduler) or b) have a lock file that didn't get removed (ensure your Windows File explorer options don't prevent you from seeing it, or c) shift bypass is disabled and code is running and causing the issue.

I can't see corruption being the issue as long as it works in one place and you're not copying the file to the usb drive and opening it from there. If none of that helps I'm out of suggestions. Please do post your solution when you find it.

    Thank you for your suggestions.
I took a file that was a copy of the MDB with a different name than the file that I am trying to update and no one at the site would even think of opening. I put it on a thumb drive and was unable to open it in edit mode on my desk top, my laptop, and my wife's computer that has never seen that MDB before.

SAME RESULT. It said that another user had it open was updating it so I was not allowed to.

I pay for a backup but so far have be unable to download anything let alone anything useful.

OK, last last suggestion - maybe someone here could get it open but I wouldn't count on it.
