Access 2016 Record numbers inconsistent with real total

Forgive me if this has been asked answered before. I started this Database in 2013 then upgraded to 2016. I have noticed that an Auto Numbered (PK) field contains record numbers not reflected in the 'record box' shown at the bottom left of the table (1 of x). This inconsistency is reflected in a Form created from the same table. This url https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/812718 titled 'How to reset an Auto Number field value in Access' may or may not be of some use to me. Alas it's too complicated for me to follow. I have tried Refresh / Refresh All from the Home TAB when the view appears to duplicate rows when scrolling, if indeed that is what it's purpose is, to no avail regarding the Record Numbers. I do succeed in clearing the 'Duplicates'. It's almost like some option for tracking the new entries from the related form has somehow frozen! I don't know how to unfreeze / reset it. Can someone help me please?

I'm not clear on the problem. You're not expecting the "1" in "1 of x" to match up to the autonumber value, are you? If so, that isn't it's intent. It's simply a counter. 1 is the first record displayed, regardless of what the autonumber field value is.

As pbaldy says the autonumber isn't intended to work that way. Access doesn't reorder the Pk when you delete a record so you will have gaps.

If you do intend to try an reorder these make sure you backup your database in case it breaks.

Why do you want to have these equal each other anyway?

If you want to know the total number of records use a dcount.
