    Waiting Time

I am trying to design a report based on a table. I am being hindered (or being driven slightly mad) because it takes between 5mins and 6 min 10 secs to toggle from report view to design view. When I first opened the design wizard it also took about 5 mins before the field/table list became populated.
The table has been arrived at via a link to an excell spreadsheet and to a file in the Sage accounting package. Two SELECT queries, and one group query are used to make the table.
When I run the queries separately the ODBC links work in less than 5 secs, though the excell link is slower than the Sage one.
Can any one point me in the right direction, so that I can get this sorted in a reasonable time?

PS I have just waited 4 mins for property window to appear, another 6 mins for the field list to be shown again, and yet another 5 mins for a chosen field to be dragged and dropped onto the report . I am now quite bonkers!

If you suspect the external links to the source data as being slow, then try importing the data into access tables before using it for the report.

Thanks. I will replace the odbc links by imported tables and then run the rest of the program using them. I,ll let you know how I get on

I think that the delay is probably caused by the cumulative time for all the ODBC links to run. Certainly using imported tables gets rid of the unbearable delays.
When using earlier versions of access if I needed to link to Sage I would set up the ODBC link and then immediatley create an access table by means of a query. All subsequent manipulations were then done on the table in access, more or less instantaneously. I have followed this in Access 2007 but it looks as though whenever the access table I have created is involved the link is updated even though all I might be doing is switching from the data view to the design view. Is there a difference between the access versions that might give rise to my problem?

Sorry John, I honestly don't know. But if "importing" versus "linking" solves the dilemma, then perhaps you've found your solution.

    Cheers,
