Workstation is anything where some production process is done, and which is handled as single unit. This can be:
A single machine;
A group of machines, which all work on same production orders;
A single workplace in some assembly, in case every assembly workplace works on it's own production order;
An Assembly line, in case it is handled as single unit, and has same production order for all it's workplaces;
etc.
Components and materials are delivered into workstation, then there are made any production operations determined by production order for this workstation, and as result, some article (either product, or some component for some other production order for some other workstation, or some collection of details and materials to be sent to some other workstation) is produced. I.e. machines, assembly lines, completion workplaces in storages, etc. are all workstations of different types.
