Making Field Required on a Form

I know this question has probably been asked a million times and even with all the searches Ive done online Im still per-plexed on how to do the following:

I have table in my DB and I've marked one of the fields as Required=Yes

What I noticed is that after entering the various data into the form fields, the one field that Ive marked as required (happens to be a drop down list of customers) doesn't seem to prompt me to add a value to this field based on the following subsequent actions:

    1) Closing the form out
    2) Advancing to the previous record via the form navigation arrows.

At no time do I receive a warning unless I make a selection from the dropdown, click on another field, click back into the required dropdown, delete what there and then take focus off the field. At this point it yells at me indicating its a required field.

    Please help.

you probably also have a default value in that table field? If so, consider removing it as the notion to have both doesn't make sense.
