Using Query by Form in a subform?

Greetings all! I've encountered a bit of a stumbling block in learning query design, and hope there's a solution to my current issue.

I've been learning "Query by form" so I can have a mailing list selector, following the directions at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...crosoft-access

I've built a form using two fields with drop-downs, and when I'm in that form alone it works great. However I want (Or rather my boss wants) the form with the search features to be used as a subform in other forms. However when I run the macro from the subform, it doesn't see the subform as open and prompts me for data values to search.

What do I need to change about the process so that the macro will recognize the form as being from the 'active' form?

The syntax to refer to the form changes when it's a subform:

Forms Refer to Form and Subform properties and controls
