keep focus on textbox after update-barcode scanning

Hi All-Can’t find a solution to this-I have a db designed to allow staff to allocate work to themselves. The Opening ‘switchboard’ form has a button for each staff member with their initials on it.

Clicking the button leads to a member-specific form that contains an unbound textbox and a close button.
The member of staff has a paper sheet with a barcoded serial number for each job. When they scan the barcode into the textbox, the ‘after update’ event fires an append query that adds that serial number, the staff members initials and a timestamp to a table.
A follow on command returns the textbox to blank.

It all works swimmingly until the staff member tries to scan the next serial number in-the focus has shifted from the textbox to the close button and the next scan effectively closes the page down. Can anyone see a workaround to return focus? I have tried refresh/repaint and resetting the focus on the textbox but no joy. Most questions asked and subsequent solutions on this matter seem to relate to keyboard entry.
    Many thanks,
    Mattbro451
