after importing into access the field width = 330,411 ??

    Hello Chaps

I have a .dbf data table that I am trying to get into access.
This is what I have done.
I saved the .dbf file as a .xls file then opened it with excel and saved it as an .xlsx

Then I opened Access and imported the ,xlsx file into access.

All went well but access has given all the fields a field width of 330,411?

to manually go through then all and change then is a mission and
I hope someone can tell me how to import and have the correct field width for each record?
    regards
    fred

The FieldSize property is set to 330,411? I can't manually set that parameter, don't understand how Access can do it in import. If you want to provide Excel file for testing, attach to post.

You are importing into a single table? How many fields are there that it would be such an effort to correct?

    Hello June 7,
I have attached the zip of the .xlsx file
I hope i get it right. there are about 30 fields and i import into on accdb called "customer"
however the importing software suggests creating additional table which i let it do.
As i am learning the program I make many mistakes that reguire starting again and
my usual procedure is to start from scratch by importinh the table again.
note that the .xlsx file starts as a functioning .dbf file created by dBsae 4 ver 2

Imported the worksheet. All text fields are FieldSize 255. Not seeing the issue you describe.

Hello june7-- still trying and would like to add to my last post
I see that when the imported table is viewed in "design view" the field width is shown as 255 but
when viewed in "datasheet view" only the first field appears. If i rt-click on the heading and select
"field width" the field width is shown a 330,411 . Changing this to say 20 then will display the field as
20 long on the datasheet view. this adjustment is nessessary on all fields

    regards

is this the same problem you had here?

    https://www.accessforums.net/showthread.php?t=65421

same issue with column width but a different file type you are importing.

I'm wondering if it is something to do with your windows or access measurements - is 330,411 actually three hundred and thirty thousand.... or three hundred and thirty...? i.e. you use a comma instead of a dot for decimal place.

a 'normal' column width is 1 inch or 2.54cm as set in access options>datasheet>default column width

however this reports as 18.5 in terms of field width when right clicking on a datasheet column heading - which is supposed to be a measurement in twips and a 1" width would equate to 1440 twips. I can't see any relationship between 18.5 and 1440 so kind of dry up at this point, but speculate there may be an issue with your default settings (dot v comma) and or perhaps you are using screen magnification which may affect the twips value

    Thanks for the info--
Yes this is the same issue- At the previous time I was just embarking on access and
decided that i needed more experience before importing--
Yes it is exactly the same issue and following your information I looked at the default
setting for field width (options>datasheet>default column width ) and I find that
    my column width is 52,499CM.
I re-imported the XLS file - but regrettably the problem hadnt gone away.
so now when I import I select column 1 and then shift rt arrow to the end and
then rt click and on column witdh i select best fit and I carry on from there.
by the way to column width is reported at three hundred and thirty thousand
four hundred and eleven - there is no mistake about the decimal point .it is a comma!
thanks for all your concern- but the problem still exists. In a few days time is my birthday and
I am treating myself to a new 64 bit computer - so that may solve the problem
    best regards

    fred

In datasheet view all fields display and all show 11.75 width.

In your case, all fields are 330,411 width which means they won't fit on the screen. Never encountered this situation before.

Does this happen when manually creating a new table?

Is there another computer you test this import on?

so you are saying that 52,499CM is 52 thousand+ cm?

Either way, I would expect it to be 2.54cm (or 2,54cm if your decimal marker is a comma)

In cm, the 'as shipped' default width is 2.499cm - it looks like at some point someone has added a 5 to the front to make it 52,499CM

so suggest remove the initial 5 and see if this solves the problem
