How to get rid of extraneous characters/HTML tags while updating a plain text field from an RTF fie

I have a plain text field test taking the data from an Rtf column.While updating the field,the extra characters like <div etc also comes.Even though I used plaintext function but still it removed <div but there were still &nbsp,#58 etc extra characters.can sm1 help on this?

run REPLACE on the extra text
put it in an update query.
