Sorting date columns in query

I's new to Access. I used the Design window for write a query showing payments by date (month/year). The query seems to work correctly, except that the date labeled columns don't sort correctly. I did check the field type is date/time. Also, I tried setting the Sort: in the query window to both--once tried 'ascending' and then tried 'descending'. Neither works. The dates aren't in order. can you help?

Do you have any other sorting that is happening before the date column?

No I don't have any other sorts.

This is a crosstab report. If that make a difference. Here is my set up:

Field: ProjID
Table:Payment
Total: Group By
Crosstab:Row Heading

Field: PaymtDate
Table: Payment
Total: Group By
Crosstab: Column Heading
Sort: Ascending

Field: PdAmount
Table: Payment
Total: Sum
Crosstab: Value

Field: Pd Amount
Table: Payment
Total: Sum
Crosstab: Row Heading

You could try setting the format of the date field to something like dd/mm/yyyy
I'm just wondering if it's something to do with regional settings.
