Windows 7 and OLE object in a Form

    Background:
Most of our Access DB users are running Windows XP. Our Art department works out of Illustrator CS. In Access, we have a form with a OLE field which the artist copies the Illustrator artwork (select the artwork, Drag-n-drop the artwork in to the OLE field). In Windows XP this works perfect.

    Issue:
We started replacing aging systems with new Windows 7 computers. The Artist drags-n-drops the artwork in to the OLE Field as normal and the art appears in the box. The problem is that Access will not save the content of the OLE box in Windows 7. You cannot click outside of the OLE box or navigate to a different record. The only way out is to hit ESC which clears the OLE box and discards the information entered.

    Any ideas??

I have tried Access 2007 and Access 2010(beta) and each behave the same as Access 2003. It is definitely a Windows 7 issue. Tried running each app in a "Windows XP Compatibility" mode with no luck. The "Windows XP Mode" in Windows 7 utilizes a different IP address so our database will not run inside of that mode either. Same references as a Windows XP machine.

Attachments in Access 2007 replace the OLEDB data type of the older versions. However the OLEDB data type is continued for backward compatibility. Access 2007, of course, only allows the creation of the new data type.

    Hope this helps.
    Good luck.

We really need to maintain the OLE data type. When using drag-n-drop from Illustrator the vector file is copied to the table allowing you to utilize a transparent background. We can then call the OLE field and overlay it on other graphics in reports and forms. I don't believe any functionality like that is possible with the attachment data type.

There has to be some change that Windows 7 includes that prevents us from saving non-rasterized data in to a OLE data field... For example if I go from Illustrator to Windows Paint, then copy from Paint and paste in to the OLE field...Work Perfect...except it is rasterized (white background, crappy image, etc...). It almost appears that Windows 7 is preventing the save to the table or not processing the data correctly...

Try reformatting the images as a WMF before copying it into the OLD field. WMF is a vector image format so you shouldn't have to deal with image quality loss from conversion to a raster image. Plus, with it being a native Windows format, you shouldn't have any problems with Access not accepting it either.
