    Default Value from Table Content

    Hi There,

I am an Access novice and am working to build a relational database for the living plant collections at my job.

I have a reference table that contains 2 columns Genus and Family. (there are many different genera/family for ex: genus Hamamelis is in family Hamamelidaceae as is the genus Parrotia so this table basically lists out every genus we have represented and its corresponding family)

I have a second table that contains more detailed information. This field takes taxa information and breaks it down into Genus, Species, Cultivars, Family etc. I would like to be able to enter a Genus pulled from the "Genus and Family" table (this part I know how to do) and have the Family field autofill with the corresponding entry from the Family field in "Genus and Family".

Ex: Within the Taxon table if I enter the genus Hamamelis and the cell for Family autofills with Hamamelidaceae.

Any suggestions? Hopefully this question isn't too rudimentary.

    Thanks!
    Jaime

Thank you for your quick response, but I still find that a little bit confusing... Maybe plant nerds aren't built for messing in Access! (I have enough knowledge to be dangerous, but not enough to claim any sort of proficiency)

I'm trying to work through my tables in the same matter described, but keep getting syntax errors.

To my knowledge you can't do things like that directly in tables. Most of us prevent users from ever seeing tables and queries. They work exclusively with forms and reports.

I should have added that you have a lot more control over what the user can and can't do in forms/reports, as well as formatting, layout, etc.

Welcome to the site by the way!
