for buttons, your example has probably been developed in an earlier version of Access. But for text boxes and other controls, use the special effect property

Probably a textbox with the SpecialEffect property set to Sunken and BackColor property to a gray shade.

I just tested building this on a form that was originally designed in Access 2007. Don't get the effect. However, created a new form and does apply the effect.

    thanks
It would also help to know what version of Access you are using.

Around the date and time in the upper left corner it called the sunken special effect. I have used it on rectangles to have add the same look behind other controls. The trick is to set the position of the rectangular to: send to back.

I use the rectangle a lot to visually group controls.
