.accdr won't open

i've renamed a file from .accdb to .accdr but now it won't open. To be precise, access opens very breifly and closes again.



What am I doing wrong, please?

Thanks for that. I'm clear on the need to distribute as .accde but the thread doesn't explain why my .accdr opens and closes immediately.

I am assuming that you already have the full Access or run-time Access installed on your computer.
You may need to change your File Association settings so that Access is the default program to open accdr files.

i have access 2007 which is what i'm writingthe db in. clicking on the file does open access but it immediately closes so i would think the file association is correct.

Try changing the file extension back to accdb. If that removes the symptom, your app is not suitable for Run Time and you need to adjust your app so it is suitable for Run Time.

it does work if i change it back. What might make it unsuitable for runtime? Its very simple - just has one table, form and report.

In order for an application to work and survive in Run Time it cannot rely/depend on any Design Time or Debug Time. Your app should launch a form for the user to interact with. All interactions should be supported by Macros and or VBA.

Ah, now this sounds like the problem. I'm not sure if I'm launching a form. I went to access options/current database/display form and selected the name of my form. This form now opens when I open the db as an .accdb but not as an .accdr

You may have an AutoExec macro that is creating issues. One of the conditions for an accdr or an accde is that the file cannot execute Design Time commands. Did you create and save a Macro, naming it AutoExec?

Similarly, your form could be trying to make a request that is only available during Design Time.

No, no macros at all. I've literally opened access, created a simple table, a form and a report and saved it.

If the file is not a trusted file it may prompt you to accept it. If you cancel, it will close. Aside from that, maybe you need to compile your VBA. It sounds like you do not have any code to compile though.

There's no prompting and there's no extra code, just the 3 aforementioned things.

You may want to try uploading your database for analysis. If you do so, just be sure to remove any sensitive data first.

no sensitive data. It's a very simple start so I could learn how to save and load etc.
