Hi -
I just created a test access table then split it. When I reopen the front end, when I try to edit a record I get the message "This Recordset is not updatable"
How do I update the record?
Thanks,
Jim

Do you have read/write permission on the folder where the back end is?
Hi Paul -
I should. I created the BE database in a separate folder on my local hard drive.
C:\Access\test.accdb
C:\Access\Back End\test_be.accdb

OK, I figured out what was happening. I had created an Excel spreadsheet using the test_be.accdb as an external data source. Why I had the Excel file open, it caused the BE file to be locked for updates.
How can I open the Excel file in a "Read-Only" mode so that I can still make updates to the BE from the FE Access DB?
Jim
Are you saying the Excel file is linked to the back end, and then to the front? If so, try linking it directly to the front end.
Thanks Paul.
Ultimately, what I am trying to do is create a multi-user system.
I will use Access for data Entry and use Excel to do some calculations and reports from the BE data.
So, what I want to do is have the Excel spreadsheet in a "Read-Only" mode to the BE Access database so that updates can still be made with the FE Database.
Jim
Have you tried linking the Excel file directly to the front end rather than the back end? If it works with the back end data, I'm not sure it even needs to be linked in the back end. I would expect the link to be done from Excel, though that's not something I've done. In other words, Excel would pull the data rather than it being linked. Linking is how Access gets data, not sure that Excel works the same way.
