    A quick thought, for names beginning A-D, prefix them with "ZZZ", UNTESTED
    then sort the file ascending,
    then write the data to a table,
    Read the table, changing any name beginning ZZZ to Mid( yourname, 3)

    So this is homework. Have you talked to your friends?

    My thoughts were just thoughts, not cheating. Try it yourself.

    No need to modify data and write to another table.

    Create a field in query that calculates a value for sorting using orange's idea of the ZZZ prefix. Use that field in the sorting criteria.

    SELECT * FROM tablename ORDER BY IIf(Left([namefield],1) LIKE "[A-D]", "ZZZ", "") & [namefield];

    This is basic Access functionality. Use the query builder. Can switch to SQL view. Copy/paste the suggested SQL statement and change [tablename] and [fieldname] to your actual names. Switch back to Design view to see the structure.

    Use the query as the form RecordSource.
