How does database get locked when people can't write LDB files?

I have a database on a shared network drive. All users except the manager have only read access to the file/directory. However, if the manager tries to open the file while other users have access open, it only allows him to read it as read only. If they close the database, then he can open it with read-write. Does access use another mechanism other than ldb files for locking?

The weird thing is that it seems to be locking correctly. If the manager tries to open the file while someone has it open, it's read-only. If he tries to open it once they close the database, it isn't. I tried it myself

Sounds like you do not checked off in Client Settings Shared and Edited Record.

If you go to FILE/Options, then Client Options, there is a section header named "Advanced" (at the bottom).
The second line down is "Default open mode".
If this is a multi-user dB (it is), the "Shared" radio button should be selected.
This will allow many people to edit the dB if they have permission.
