Split / Database Security vs User Access

RE: MS Access 2007 (Split database)

I have a directory on the server where four users have read / write access and others have read only access. I did the "read only" because of security issues. The problem is "Read Only" users can not do anything when someone else has the file open. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Maybe place the DB in a subdirectory.

I have each user get their own copy of the app (front end)
while the data (back-end) is on the server.

Thanks for responding, I have five sub-directories, two of which are Front-Ends and Back-ends.

As long as each individual runs their own copy, everyone will work.

I send front ends to each user to save whereever they wish and the back end is on a server.

Out IT department set up the back end directory rights as either Full Access or Read Only (my preference). Only specific people can access the back end directory .

The issue seems to be with the back-end and not the front-end. It seems I read somewhere that every user needs full back-end access and I may be trying to cheat the system. I just don't trust folks. I did put a different encrytion password on the back-end so I "should" be covered somewhat. No-one can change the back-end table unless they have the password. My fear was they could delete the back-end even if they didn't have the password to open it. We backup every night so that would help some.

Thought someone may know a trick.

You could dedicate an FE file to keep the BE open. Place the DB in a secure location. At night it could do maintenance on the BE.
