How to filter a MASTERFORM on date in the SUBFORM?

I have a form with two forms: a master form of students with personal details and the like and a subform with multiple details of courses taken.

The subform includes, for example, a field with the student's starting date.

How do I filter the masterform based on a student's starting date? In other words, sequence the master based on starting date?

It seems easy to filter either form on the data within that form, but not that in the other form, but there is usually a way to do these things if only one knows ....

    Thanks

If the master form is a single record of 1 student, then put a combo box on the master form that is filtered to that student's ID.
The combo would have a list of all that 1 student's dates.
Pick a date, filter only that info.
