Formatting Numbers in a Chart

I am trying to create a chart based on the query below. The chart shows the numbers with no commas, but the query obviously does (in currency format). I have tried formatting the numbers in design view of the form on the datasheet, which appears to work immediately, but the change doesn't save. I have also changed my query to be Total $ Spent: Sum(Format([Total],"Currency")), but it made no difference. How can I get the currency format to show on the chart?

AFAIK, cannot apply any formatting to the data and maintain its usefulness as numeric entities.
