form and tab control design issue

I have a blank form with no record source assigned. In the form I have a tab control with 3 tabs; each tab has a form embedded with a different record source. The issue is that one of my forms with a record source has a subform that communicates with the parent form via command button, but access is seeing the parent form as a sub form of the blank no record source form so I get a run-time 2450.
I really like the Tab Control layout and the users have responded well to it as well. I would like to continue with this design but the current limitation is concerning. I am thinking of giving the currently blank form a record source and then having the record source change upon a Tab control being clicked.
Anyone out there have a better idea? Am I heading down a dangerous path? Hopefully some experience out there will shed some light. Thanks.

Well, the fact that the blank form has no record source is irrelevant to it being the parent form of the subform. You just have to refer to the subform correctly:

Forms Refer to Form and Subform properties and controls
