What coursework - a course on databases, specifically Access? This is very basic Access functionality. Any decent introductory course in Access should cover this.
What do you not understand? Do you need to know a specific function to accomplish a particular calculation?
Have you worked with the ExpressionBuilder tool (I don't use it).
