I have 2 queries i am linking to make one query and joining on SSN, the 2 queries both have inner joins within them. In the new query the inner join works but i need a left join and when i run it i can an invalid operation error... any ideas?

Post the SQL statements that work and the one that doesn't work. Explain what you want to happen in the one that is not working.
