Have Access warn or veto when incompatible values are entered in a pair of fields

    Hi All,

I administer a database that tracks a library's journal subscriptions and holdings. Two of the fields in my holdings table are subscription status (SubStat) and holding status (HoldStat). Subscription status has four possible values: Current, New, To be cancelled, and Cancelled. Holding status (HoldStat) has two possible values: Present and previous.

The only reasonable subscription status for a record to have when HoldStat=previous is SubStat=Cancelled.

Does anyone know if there is a way to have Access warn or stop a user when he tries to navigate away from a record with HoldStat=previous and SubStat=anything other than Cancelled?

    Thank you very much!

I would use the form's before update event:

In your case you'd be testing the two controls for the appropriate values.
