    Shipping database with references?

If I design a database that uses has references that a normal office user may not have on his system. I can't ship the "compiled" accdb, and the references be automatically included - can I? I must manually install the .dll / object file, and register it, before I can have them use my database?

You don't have to manually install the dll or object file but you can have an install script to do it. You can check out INNO SETUP which is free and will do that.
