Lightbulb New to access, need ideas!

Hello Everyone, I am new to the forum and new to access. I have general knowledge in access, but recently started using it seriously. I do not have a problem researching and learning new things, i just need to know what i am looking for!

I am looking for some techniques to perform the steps i will be doing on a daily basis.

1)Import multiple files containing 500k+ lines items into a database(Text Files, Tab Deliminated) (retain original file name the line item came from)

2)Organize base on category(a column on import)

    3) Export in manageable chunks (5k a piece) And assign a file number. The file number must be logged. (Each line item should have an original file number, and a internal file number)

4)After file is completed(a different process) Re-Import with additional fields added to each item.

5)Export new items that have not been exported previously.

As of right now i am doing the combing/splitting of the files inside of excel. Then importing the completed data into access and running a query to export into the needed format.

I recently just reached the 2gb cap on access as well!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Do you run Compact & Repair on the Access file regularly? If you really have reached 2gb then either break up data into multiple files or graduate to SQL or Oracle.

The programming you describe can certainly be done. Complex and advanced programming will require VBA coding.
How to attach file: http://www.accessforums.net/showthread.php?t=70301 To provide db: copy, remove confidential data, run compact & repair, zip w/Windows Compression.

Please reply to this thread with any new information or opinions.
