Find a month for each Name.

I have a table with a list of names that are repeated as little as one month but as many as 12. The table has another column with the day, 3-09-2010. What I want to do is to create a query that for every name, I want to choose January but if there is no January I want it to choose december. I want to do this four times but I figure if i can do it for January and december i can do it for April and May etc... Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Why only 4 times? What is it you are really trying to do?
