Max out after importing only 188 fields

I imported a text file with 188 fields to Access 2010. Importing works fine. But once I changed the field definition from 'text' to 'byte', I am getting 'Too many fields defined'. The text file only contains the field names and no data yet.

This is way below the 255 max fields limitation and I am actually decreasing the field sizes by going from text to byte.

Any way to get around this issue ?

    Thanks!

OK, I found the fix. I just need to "compact the database again which should reset the internal field count counter".
