activex object in a form works only after going to design mode

I have a form that uses an Activex Object (on ACCESS 2003 platform) to negotiate with equipment using the serial port (RS232).

Everything was working good until a few weeks ago when suddenly it didnt work. no changes were made to the code (maybe it was an update to XP that caused this?).

Anyway - I tried re-registering it and debugg the problem and found a very strange behaviour - If you open the form the button based on the control doesnt work but if you go to DESIGN mode and then back to FORM view (without changing ANYTHING!) - it works!



Can someone explain this or suggest a way to work around it?

I would try importing everything into a fresh database to see if the problem goes away.
