Close connections whilst displaying report - Cannot open anymore databases

I have a complex report which has many subreports. When I preview this report, the active connections go down from 240 to about 30. Available connections are restored to 240 when the report is closed. However, with the report using so many connections, if the user tries to use certain functionality with the report still in preview, Access will show a "Cannot open anymore databases" error. Is there a way to close connections whilst a report is being previewed? Any suggestions are welcome.

Not a direct answer to your question, but what about punching the report out to PDF and then opening that for the user?

It's best to optimize your forms and reports for a leaner experience. Unbind forms, hardcode comboboxes that will unlikely change, redo the report little by little reviewing available connections with each modification that you add, redesign the workflow to limit the amount of open forms, etc. Optmize.
