What happens if work order number is modified in some way not in your control or if its repeated after a number of years?

There are a lot of discussions on this subject with differing opinions. Google it.

Personally I always use an autonumber as there is no question as to its uniqueness.
Ah. There seems to be a misunderstanding. I believe I stated it above but the PK(barcode) is not being modified. It is being entered to pull up the adjacent fields (ex: status, time, job type) and modify some of those such as changing the status from new to complete.

    EDIT-

I think you do. Adding an autonumber field to your table is easy in the beginning, but may be a challenge when there is existing data in related tables. Still possible to fix though. Question is, do you have the motivation to prevent an issue, especially if it hasn't raised its ugly head yet.
I don't have permission to do that. I don't think it matters since the PK will not be modified and at the rate we make them we wont cycle through the possible 10 million orders for a few decades.

My main issue is still the barcode double scanning. I don't know how to deal with that. I suppose I will just have to remove the complete button from the tab index.

I ended up just making a control that has no width at the end of the box it gets typed in. I made it locked so no data gets put in upon double scan and changed the default enter key behavior on that control to do new lines.
That way the user can just press tab and then enter.
