    Need Advice on Table Designs

We run a small nonprofit that aides families that are battling cancer. So, we keep up with each patient's contact info and details and we also need to keep up with their relationships (mother, father, social worker, refernce person, etc.) Should the patients and the relationships be the same table, or should they be separate tables?

Start with one table for all People.

Then one approach would have a field for each relationship - many fields will be left blank and query will require multiple self-join links to display related info for each relationship. This does not really follow normalization principles. If there were only one relationship to map, such as an employee/supervisor, this approach would be fine.

Other would have a separate table for relationships with foreign key fields for PatientID and RelationID and a field for RelationType. A query would use two instances of People table to display info. This is more normalized schema.

The People should probably all be in the same table and then a junction table to relate the Patient to each person and their role.
If this helped, please click the star * at the bottom left and add to my reputation- Thanks
