Best way to synchronize two subforms?

I'm trying to link two subforms so the child form goes into more detail of the record selected in the master form, like in the video below. In the video it shows that the "Link Master Field" field is a reference to a textbox, but I'm wondering if I can reference the master form directly, rather than having to point to the textbox (which seems like a clunky solution)?

Clunky or not, it is method to synchronize related subforms. So unless you want to have form/subform/subsubform tiered arrangement, use the described method to synchronize subform and subsubform when they are side-by-side instead of tiered.
