    New and learning

Trying to import database to SQL Server using the Sql Server Management Studio

Database was built using Access 16 (64bit)

Migrating/importing to SQL Server 19 developer edition

trying to use the Data source as
Microsoft Access (Microsoft Access Jet Database Engine)

and I get an unrecognized file format error

    any thoughts are appreciated

As only the data from tables are imported: save the tables to a new access file in .mdb format. If there are fields in your accdb that can't be converted to .mdb, they can't be imported in SQL Server anyway. SQL server can recognize .mdb format. Another option: export each table to excel and import the excels.

I finally got it to work.
not through SSMS but using the Direct Import wizard for SQL Server
