    "Add Field" missing


    On Access 2007, I have an existing database that was set up a long time ago. I want to add a Field to it. But when I right-click on the columns "Add Field" is missing. "Add existing field" is there but nor "Add Field". On the menus bar, "Datasheet" is missing - the last item on the Menu Bar is "Database Tools". And when I go along the fields to the end, there is no "Add New Field" column. I am guessing that somehow the database has locked the ability to add new fields but I cannot see how to unlock this. Thanks for any help with this.

    can you goto Table Design and add it?
    is your table in a backend database? you cant edit backend from the frontend

    It sounds as if it is a linked table.
    You can't change the design of a linked table. You have to be in the database the linked table is actually stored in.

    Yes - these answers look right - Now I just have to work out what the original database is.
    I have starred both answers - I hope I have done it right

    If you hover over the table in the navigation window it should display the path or server of the backend database.
    The other option is to look in the linked table manager, but I can't remember in 2007 version what that tells you.

    Under Access Options, what is your setting for "Enable design changes for tables in Datasheet view"?

    If this file is a linked table, is there anywhere in Access that tells me what file it is linked to?

    You can find the database contain each linked table in several ways
    1. Using the linked table manager
    2. Hover the cursor over a linked table in the navigation pane for a couple of seconds
    3. Look in the Connect column of the read only system table MSysObjects. You need to tick Show System Objects in Navigation Objects to see this.
    4. Run a query on the MSysObjects table to include the Name, Type and Connect fields. Filter for Connect is not null

    As with any system table, take care...but as its read only there is nothing you can do wrong in this case
